Joomla! 3.1 was released in September 2012. This highly awaited update contains several new features that make creating and managing a Joomla! site even easier. Here’s an overview of our favorite changes at Simple CMS Design.

Mobile Friendly Administration

The Joomla!3.1 administration system is completely device responsive. This means that the backend will automatically adapt to the screen of any device used to access it-mobile phone, computer, tablet, etc. Joomla!3.1 is the first major CMS to provide this critical ability. Need to update your site on the run? Simply log in with your iPad or phone and make your changes quickly and easily. Rest assured that visitors to your website are always viewing your site optimally no matter what device they are using.

Twitter Bootstrap

Twitter Bootstrap is a set of tools developed by Twitter that provide solutions for navigation, thumbnails, and typography features. Previously developers have used different methods leading to an inconsistent user interface between extensions. This frequently resulted in poor user experiences. With Joomla! 3.1, developers now use a common set of tools so extensions will have a consistent look and feel.

Web Installer

Joomla! 3.1 web installer experienced a major overhaul in both look and function. The web installer has been simplified to 3 steps from the 7 steps with Joomla! 2.5. Additionally, three database selections are now supported by Joomla! 3.1 installer.  Postgre SQL database is the newest option to receive Joomla! support. 

Article Tags

Now you can easily tag articles with relevant keywords to make finding other articles a breeze.  You'll also be able to create tag clouds, add multiple tags per article and use tags to display articles related to a particular word or theme no matter what category the article is stored in.

Improved Developer Tools

3.1 offers standardized backend and frontend interface using CSS and Javascript Frameworks.

Save Articles without Content

Articles can now be saved without content. Joomla! 3.1 requires a title but no content is needed in the text box. 

Language Packages

Language packages can now be installed directly from the extension manager.
